One of the questions I get asked most from people considering a move to Las Vegas is, “Is it safe to live there?”

The short answer is yes—but like any major metropolitan area, it depends on where you choose to live.

As a lifelong Las Vegas resident, I’ve watched our city grow from a small desert town into one of the largest metropolitan areas in the country. Today, more than 2.3 million people call Southern Nevada home, making it one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the United States.

Many of the people relocating to Las Vegas come from places like Los Angeles, Orange County, Seattle, Phoenix, Chicago, and the Bay Area. One statistic that often surprises people is that, based on recent FBI crime data, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department reported a violent crime rate of approximately 430 incidents per 100,000 residents, compared with about 729 in Los Angeles and 800 in Phoenix. Property crime rates also vary, but these numbers show that Las Vegas is generally comparable to—or lower than—many large cities people are leaving.

Another encouraging trend is that crime has been declining across much of the United States. According to national data, violent crime in 2024 fell to its lowest level in nearly 50 years, continuing a downward trend seen in many major metropolitan areas.

Of course, statistics only tell part of the story.

Like every major city, Las Vegas has neighborhoods that are more desirable than others. Communities such as Summerlin, Henderson, Skye Canyon, Inspirada, Southern Highlands, and Green Valley are consistently among the most popular places for families, retirees, and professionals because of their well-maintained neighborhoods, parks, schools, and strong sense of community.
